For me, becoming isn’t about arriving somewhere or achieving a certain aim. I see it instead as forward motion, a means of evolving, a way to reach continuously toward a better self. The journey doesn’t end. I became a mother, but I still have a lot to learn from and give to my children. I became a wife, but I continue to adapt to and be humbled by what it means to truly love and make a life with another person. I have become, by certain measures, a person of power, and yet there are moments still when I feel insecure or unheard. It’s all a process, steps along a path. Becoming requires equal parts patience and rigor. Becoming is never giving up on the idea that there’s more growing to be done __ Michelle Obama.

What a beautiful way to end the book, finishing this book left me so inspired, refreshed but mostly challenged. See, my view of becoming was a set destination, becoming a business owner, becoming an established content creator, becoming a girlfriend. I never saw it as a continuous journey and often times when it seemed as if it was taking longer, harder to reach my “destination” I felt discouraged and close to abandoning everything. There was also a fear of, once the destination was reached, then what? So a revelling of not reaching these destinations was secretly there so I could have reasons to wake up and work harder.
Michelle’s book is one of my favourite books because it shows that we are always evolving, we are allowed to change our goals and to add on to those we already have. It allowed me to get a new perspective, one that would greatly help me to remove getting self-value or identity from a specific destination. I am enough and worthy as is, during my journey of becoming and not only when I become. The Becoming is just as paramount as when you become.
My wish for you, going into 2021 as we live through this pandemic is to not cancel this year, we are two weeks in and it seems as if it will be another series of lockdowns and despair. But, remember that you can continuously evolve and change your goals, you are not set to become just one thing and that’s it. On your way to your bigger picture, enjoy the smaller views, learn from them, build on them. On your way to becoming an established business woman, slow as it may be with the pandemic, enjoy being an employee, enjoy being a mentee, enjoy being a customer, enjoy being a newly registered business owner, enjoy the wins, the losses and the first orders. Enjoy every stage of your becoming because all will attribute to the established business owner.
As you start your 2021, my love, please be adjustable, adjust to who you become, learn from her and go into the year knowing that you can be more than one thing, sometimes all at one time and that you will ALWAYS get better and better.
Here is to becoming…
With Love
